Riverstone Books' Monthly Book Club - ZOOM ONLY

Riverstone Books is thrilled with the success of our relaunched book club. Our next book in the new ZOOM only format will be Smoketown by Mark Whitaker. This month meeting will be the first non-fiction book of the New Year. Give yourself some quiet time with your new book friends to relax and explore some of Pittsburgh’s lesser known history.

Smoketown is the story of the other great Black Renaissance that occurred here in Pittsburgh. While most know of the histories of the far larger black communities in Chicago and New York, Pittsburgh contributed mightily to the growth and development of black culture in America. From publishing the largest black newspaper in America, to rallying the black contributions to the war effort in WW2, to fielding some of the greatest baseball teams of the Negro Leagues, Pittsburgh made outstanding contributions in sports, medicine and social services, politics, industry, and music. The history of of Pittsburgh is the history of Black America and their contributions to our nation. Written by Mark Whitaker, the bestselling author of My Long Trip Home, who became the first African-American leader of a national newsweekly.
